Pastel pencil on Clairefontaine Pastelmat

No fixative or sealant is applied, so the surface stays fragile and pastel will smear if touched. Handle it by the edges and get it behind glass.

My original nightjar drawing, built up in layers of pastel pencil on Pastelmat.

Nightjars spend the day sitting perfectly still on a branch or the ground, trusting that pattern to make them look like a piece of bark. Most of my time on this one went into getting those feathers to read as camouflage without losing the bird.
