A mandarin fish, hand drawn in pastel pencil. They're one of the most colorful fish in the ocean, and that coloring is a warning. They're one of the few fish without scales, protected instead by a bitter smelling mucus that keeps most predators away.

A note on handling: I don't apply a fixative or sealant to my pastel work. Sealants dull the color and flatten the surface, and I would rather the piece stay as it came off the board. That does mean the surface stays fragile. Keep it framed, and don't touch the artwork itself, because pastel will smear if it's handled.
